Professor Molly Stevens’ team have been awarded £50,000 in funding from the new Imperial College COVID-19 Response Fund to develop point-of-care diagnostics for the current pandemic.
These rapid, ultra-sensitive tests aim to detect low concentrations of the virus, meaning that patients can be diagnosed much earlier.
“Testing is really important in controlling the pandemic because it allows us to identifying positive cases, including asymptomatic patients, ensuring rapid isolation to reduce onward transmission,” says Prof Molly Stevens, Prof of Biomedical Materials and Regenerative Medicine at Imperial College London and Deputy Director of i-sense.
The COVID-19 Response Fund is supported by hundreds of alumni and friends of Imperial and is seeded by central funding from the President’s Excellence Fund.
The financial support will help build on research being conducted within the i-sense project, which is funded by the Engineering and Physical Research Council (EPSRC).
