i-sense is pleased to congratulate collaborators at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) on the recent launch of their new programme: South African Population Research Infrastructure Network (SAPRIN). Within AHRI, SAPRIN will be led by the Chief Information Officer Dr Kobus Herbst, who will also serve as Deputy Director of the new programme.
A harmonised population research infrastructure
Dr Herbst will work with two other existing South African Health Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) to generate high-quality evidence to inform interventions aimed at responding to some of South Africa’s biggest issues which include poverty, inequality, unemployment and poor access to effective health care.
The programme will aim to provide:
- more accessible, dynamic and timely data
- improved research outputs
- an evidence-base for cost evaluation, policy making and targeting health interventions
- an expanded human capacity for conducting science within South Africa
Partnering to making population-based science possible
This SAPRIN network is the third major partnership between the South African Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) building on, and linking with, the Strategic Health Innovation Partnership (SHIP) and the Newton programmes.
The research platform is linked with cross-cutting South African public institutions such as universities, research councils, the Ministry of Health, Social Development, Basic Education, Statistics-SA, as well as Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation in the Presidency.
